The GLN IELTS Club is composed of GLN teachers and students and has been established to organize effective supplementary training activities aimed at honing the IELTS skills students learn in class.

INTRODUCTION
Schedule: 9:00 – 9:30 AM
Duration: 30 minutes
Objectives:
To develop a sense of camaraderie among students in preparation for the other activities.

Let the students think of an adjective that describes themselves. The adjective has to start with the first letter of their first name. -
Make the students introduce themselves one by one by explaining their chosen adjective -
Before starting with his/her own introduction, the next person to speak should enumerate all the names and the corresponding adjectives of everybody who spoke before him/her.
IMPROMPTU SPEAKING
Schedule: 9:30 – 10:00 AM
Duration: 30 minutes
Objectives
To develop students’ skills in quick thinking and spontaneous public speaking.

Activity:

Let a student draw out a rolled strip of paper on which a topic is written from a box. -
Ask the student to expound on the drawn topic for 2 minutes.
BREAK
Schedule: 10:00 – 10:15 AM
DEBATE
Schedule: 10:15 – 11:45 AM
Objectives
To develop students’ skills in brainstorming, argumentative writing, persuasive public speaking and interpolating.
Participants
2 Groups of 4 students each
Materials needed
Pen and paper
Activity:
-
Group the students into two teams of 5 students each (4 speakers and 1 rebuttal speaker). Draw lots to decide the Affirmative and Negative teams. -
Show the students the topic. Allow the students 20 minutes to huddle with their team and to prepare an outline of their speech. -
Using the Oregon-Oxford Debate format, give each of the speakers a chance to deliver their constructive speeches for 3 minutes, and be interpolated for 2 minutes. -
After a 3 minute recess, the Rebuttal Speakers of each team may then give their closing arguments lasting 3 minutes.
WRAP – UP
Schedule: 11:45 – 12:00 NN
The teacher or class leader will wrap up the session by giving comments, if necessary, and reminding students of the next session. The class leader for the next week is also chosen.
